B.C. provincial government to close Legislative Library

Someone recently brought this issue to my attention, so I went trolling for newspaper articles and found this one from the Victoria Times Colonist and this one from the Vancouver Sun. It sounds like the "official" plan is to close the Legislative Library for up to two years for renovations (that part of the building is being upgraded to meet earthquake safety standards). Some of the librarians will move to other government departments in the meantime and the collection will be warehoused. Some believe the library will ultimately be moved somewhere else on the legislature's grounds, since the legislature has limited office space and has apparently been "eying the space" for some time. This would result in a significant down-sizing of materials and staff, probably resulting in what the Times Colonist calls "Library Lite."

Check out the Save the Legislative Library of B. C. blog!

If you want to rail against the powers above, write, telephone or e-mail the government:
Premier Gordon Campbell at gordon.campbell.mla@leg.bc.ca
Leader of the Official Opposition (NDP) Carole James: carole.james.mla@leg.bc.ca
Speaker of the House: Speaker@leg.bc.ca (The Speaker has control over the library and its staff according to the ACT)
