Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Award to go to Montrealer
When: Thursday, September 17th, 2009, 5pm
Where: Grande Bibliothèque, 475, boul. De Maisonneuve Est, rm.515
Who: Christine Delezenne, for her illustrations of Angèle Delaunois' text, La Clé
How: RSVP linagordaneer@gmail.com by September 14th, 2009.
Refreshments will be served after the awards presentation.
Press Release:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, September 2009: IBBY Canada (International Board on Books for Young People, Canadian National Section) is pleased to announce that illustrator Christine Delezenne is the winner of the 2008 IBBY Canada Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award for La Clé, written by Angèle Delaunois, and published by Éditions de l’Isatis.
The $1000 Award will be presented to Christine Delezenne on Thursday, September 17th at 5:00 p.m. in Montreal, at the Grande Bibliothèque (Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec), 475, boul. De Maisonneuve Est, Room R.515.
Christine Delezenne has honed her interest in new as well as old illustration techniques, and integrates a mix of drawing, textures and photography into her artwork. La Clé, a haunting tale of a young Muslim girl who is forced to flee her country due to the ravages of war, has been showered with acclaims and honours. Delezenne was born in Orange, France and now lives in Montreal.
The Award jury was made up of children's librarians Lina Gordaneer and Pascale Grenier, and Brianne Grant, MA in Children’s Literature candidate. The jury's comments on La Clé:
“Christine Delezenne uses a variety of media—photographic collage, painting, and passport stamps—to convey the dislocated experience of the refugee. Not only do the images capture the disenfranchisement in Angèle Delaunois’s uncompromising text, Delezenne also captures the perspective of the young narrator. In scenes that depict the war-torn country, only the barbed wire marking the boundaries of the refugee camp and the faces that surround the girl are depicted with realism. Everything else is dark, hazy and abstract—an intensely accurate interpretation of the perspective of a child whose world has just crumbled into chaos.”
The IBBY Canada Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Picture Book Award, established in 1985, honours the name and talent of one of Canada's pre-eminent book illustrators. Cleaver left funds in her will to annually recognize outstanding artistic talent in Canadian picture books; the recipient receives $1,000.
IBBY, the International Board on Books for Young People (www.ibby.org), founded in 1953, represents an international network of people committed to bringing books and children together. IBBY Canada is one of over 70 national sections worldwide. IBBY Canada is a volunteer organization promoting quality French and English Canadian children's literature nationally and internationally.
Professional Partnering Program 2009-2010
Dear librarians and information professionals,
The CLA student chapter at McGill University is pleased to invite you to participate in the 2009/2010 Professional Partnering Program.
What is Professional Partnering?
Started in 2008, the Professional Partnering Program is a flexible mentoring program that connects students in McGill's School of Information Studies to information professionals working in an area of interest to the student. The program is aimed at developing relationships between students and professionals at a personal level and supporting students' career exploration.
In 2008, more than 40 professionals participated in the program, making the program a great success: over 90% of participants rated the program as excellent.
What is the time commitment?
Professional Partnering is designed to provide opportunities for communication without requiring a specific time commitment from participants. The program will begin with an informal reception to introduce participants to each other, but from that point, levels of involvement and specific activities are up to the interests of each pair.
What type of activities does Professional Partnering entail?
We encourage partners to determine what types of activities work best for them. Some suggestions include:
* a tour of your workplace
* job shadowing
* regular e-mail correspondence
* informal, in-person chats
* resume and job-seeking advice
* career planning sessions
* an introduction to other professionals at conferences, lectures, or meetings.
How do I participate?
More information and application forms are available at http://www.mcgill.ca/sis-
Please feel free to contact Benjamin Girard-Bond at benjamin.girard-bond@mail.
We hope that you will take this opportunity to contribute to the professional development of future colleagues. Professional Partnering is intended to be a two-way exchange. The program is a great way to exchange information, reflect on your own career, and participate in the LIS community.
